Astro’s Playroom: Here’s What Happens When The Big Timer Hits Zero Astro Bot Countdown Event
We described the trophies, controls, and the most important aspects of the game. Having the rewards be items that we grew up with tugs nostalgic heartstrings — and each model is rendered perfectly. The PSP reward is so detailed that it feels like Team Asobi could have placed your old childhood PSP into the game. You can explore all these items in the PlayStation Lago, a hub area of everything you collect. It’s a lot of fun to scale up these objects, and each one has a cool animation.
Acquiring these trophies requires dedication, skill, and a willingness to explore every nook and cranny of the virtual world. All of these artifacts are obtained after you defeat the T-Rex bosses and see the game credits. They don’t count towards Dude Raider for the platinum, but beating the bosses and picking up all 4 of these awards the DLC trophy Play Has No Limits! The Astro Bots made their debut with the PlayStation VR tech demo, The Playroom. They showcased the capabilities of the VR device and left an impression on the higher-ups at Sony. This spun off into their own full VR action-platformer game, Astro Bot Rescue Mission, which got a ton of critical praise and even the Best VR/AR Game award at the 2018 Game Awards. The game’s 16 levels feature nasty little bots to defeat, and little secrets and character cameos to find, such as the Buster Sword from Final Fantasy 7 or Jin Sakai from Ghost of Tsushima.
This references 1999’s Ape Escape on PS1, made by SCE Japan Studio. Ape Escape is notable for being the first PlayStation game to require a Dual Analog/DualShock controller; you couldn’t play it using the launch gamepad. The Multitap was an add-on that allowed the PlayStation to support more than two controllers and Memory Cards. The final Astro’s Playroom update for all four special bots is out now, and the DLC can be carried over to Astro Bot when it launches on Friday, September 6, for the PS5. The special bots are from Bloodborne, Returnal, Gran Turismo, and Ape Escape.
It’s also the first PlayStation controller to have textured analog sticks and monochrome face button symbols (preceded by the PSP and Vita handhelds). Finally, the controller also has a built-in microphone so that it can be used for game and party chats. Vita Game Packs could also be used on the PlayStation TV, which meant it wasn’t a digital-only platform like the PSP Go was. The PlayStation 3 used Blu-Ray discs as its optical storage method, a format that would be used for the PlayStation 4 and 5 as well. Because every PS3 came with an internal hard drive, many games supported partially installing data onto the console in advance (which some PS2 games also did, especially in Japan). Until the Wii U, the PS3 was the only system using optical storage with more capacity than a DVD, meaning many games that were on multiple discs elsewhere could be on one PS3 disc.

The PlayStation 2 Memory Card holds 8 MB of storage, eight times more than the original’s, and abandoned the blocks system so that saves could be whatever size they needed to. It could also store PS1 saves on it if copied over (which Suikoden III took advantage of), although PS1 games would not be able to detect them. Interestingly, the disc in Astro’s Playroom has a blue back, which was used for PS2 games that were small enough to fit on a CD-ROM, the format used by the original PlayStation. The DualShock was actually preceded by the Dual Analog Controller in April that same year.
The game is a fantastic tech demo for the DualSense controller while also being an enjoyable platformer in its own right. I’ve developed an incredibly annoying habit while playing Astro’s Playroom.
