The DualShock Controller is one of the most recognizable pieces of PlayStation history, and replaced the original pad as the pack-in controller. It added twin analog sticks (which could be pressed in for L3 and R3), a small and large rumble motor in either handle, and increased the height of the L2 and R2 buttons. It’s a wonderful celebration of PlayStation’s history but the absolute best moment is the final boss battle which is so perfectly handled we almost died of nostalgia playing it. These fun‚ creative achievements add variety to your trophy hunt experience. You’ll be greeted with a message that says a special bot is hidden somewhere in Deep Dataspace. On its own, Astro’s Playroom would be a fun platforming distraction fit for younger gamers or families. Its world is vibrant and wonderfully detailed, and it looks exceptional on the PS5. But in all honesty, this isn’t so much a game as it is a showpiece for what the DualSense controller can do.
However, I have been very disappointed in their increasingly silly take on PSSR. If you have only unlocked one or two in Astro’s Playroom, they will appear here individually, meaning you can return and get the rest when you are ready. Before you proceed, we recommend you play around with the D-Pad, which will cause Astro to perform four different dances through the four directions. Familiarize yourself with these, as you’ll need to remember them shortly. To find the special in Memory Meadow, head to the Gusty Gateway area. Basically, it means that the triggers can offer resistance if you’re trying to perform some task that requires a lot of effort.
Artifact 2/2 “PlayStation Mouse” – In the section where you are meant to jump across the clouds, instead of going towards the checkpoint you should jump onto the cliff ledges which lead higher up. From there you can climb up to the top section on the right to find this artifact. Puzzle Piece 2/4– In the area with the first blowing cloud, run against the wind to grab this puzzle piece. Puzzle Piece 4/4 – When you exit the caves and are out of the ship, drop down to the lower floor to find this puzzle piece underneath some glass. Artifact 2/2 “PS2 Memory Card” – Hold both triggers down fullying to puh yourself through the two purple spiderwebs to find this artifact on the other side. Puzzle Piece 3/4 – When you see the electrical hazards, continue to the right where you see the purple webs instead of continuing up.
Once you do, these bots will be added to your collection of bots when you play Astro Bot. So often that’s where magic in video games happens, and that’s most certainly the case here. On its own, this is a beautifully crafted, exquisitely paced and absolutely gorgeous 3D platformer. Combined with the hardware it’s bundled on, it’s something very special indeed – and one of the best launch titles I can remember in an age. It’s a phenomenal thing, taken even further with adaptive triggers that provide meaningful, forceful feedback. In Astro’s Playroom, the player has to complete 4 main locations divided into 4 levels.
Completing levels unlocks rewards, encouraging players to replay. The fun is to explore locations, jump between platforms and perform simple puzzles. From time to time, we also find enemies that we can avoid or overpower with fast punches. Because I grew up playing video games in the late 90s and early 00s, the rhythms of the 3D platformer are as instinctive to me as breathing. Put me in front of Fortnite and I’m all thumbs – how can these kids think about building and shooting things at the same time!?
And as a result, this isn’t so much a review, as it is an opportunity to highlight how well the features on the PS5 controller work. From the start, climb the first ledge, and instead of progressing on the critical path to the wall ahead, go through the grass on the left, and you’ll find a Bloodborne bot. And yet, even when Astro is pulling off his most basic moves in familiar environments, this game feels revelatory. The PS5’s new controller combines a built-in speaker with vibrating haptics to make interacting with the world feel like it’s literally happening in your hand. Astro running across a sandy beach sounds and feels completely different than running on a fluffy cloud, for example. Astro’s Playroom has a new tool in that regard, of course, with the PlayStation 5’s DualSense controller and its haptic feedback.

In the Labo area is a Bot using a PS1 controller to drive a red car around him. This references Ridge Racer, released on the PS1 in 1994 and developed by Namco. The car being driven is the one of the game’s boxart, the F/A Fiera, also known as the Kamata Fiera.

While it may not be exactly a photorealistic game, it still benefits from the power of the PS5 in some pretty incredible ways. In motion, particularly when taken in concert with all of the features of the DualSense, it’s an experience unlike any we’ve had on consoles yet. The four main areas consist of four smaller subsections that alternate between standard the more standard Astro platforming and a specific suit for each area with special mechanics. Cooling Springs, for example, sees Astro get into a springy frog suit, using the adaptive triggers to compress the spring and moving the controller to aim where it will leap to. The eponymous playroom is the brand new console that was just removed from its box. The titular robot, Astro, jumps, glides, fights, and more through four levels based on different aspects of the PS5 hardware.

You’ll receive the 4 final artifacts, which include the 3D Pulse Wireless Headset, HD Camera, DualSense Wireless Controller, and the PlayStation 5 and the trophy will unlock. Once, you found all the required artifacts, go to the PlayStation Labo and you will see 3 artifacts hanging from the ceiling. Climb up the ladder from the PS2 and jump from gun to gun until you stand on the PS VR Aim Controller.
